The 2020 UEFA Super Cup will be played at Puskás Aréna in Budapest (Hungary) on 24 September at 21:00 CET between Bayern Munich vs Sevilla. As of 2020, the fixed amount of prize money paid to the clubs is as follows:
- Runner-up: €3,800,000
- Winner: €5,000,000
The annual match between the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League winners was originally to be played at the Estádio do Dragão in Porto (Portugal) on 12 August.
The UEFA Super Cup’s sponsors are the same as the sponsors for the UEFA Champions League (Santander, Gazprom, MasterCard, Heineken, Nissan, etc…). Adidas is a secondary sponsor and supplies the official match ball and referee uniform.
The next editions of the UEFA Super Cup will take place as originally planned in Belfast (2021), Helsinki (2022) and Kazan (2023).
The Big Match will play with a small number of spectators, up to 30% of the stadium capacity. The Stadium can accommodate around 68,000 spectators, so there will be over 20,000 present. The idea of the UEFA Super Cup came from Anton Witkamp, then a journalist and then director of the sports section of the newspaper De Telegraaf. Witcamp came up with the idea of ”something new” to determine who was the best European club and to test Ajax’s skills. “The idea was conceived in the era of total football. Our era. Four consecutive European Cups won between Feyenoord and Ajax. More than money and glory, they pursued the right to be the best.”
The first Super Cup played under the aegis of UEFA was played in January 1974, although it was originally scheduled for 1973. The first real UEFA Super Cup was played at the Giuseppe Meazza stadium, when Ajax surrendered 1-0 at Milan AC. Ajax played a perfect match in the return leg and won 6-0 in Amsterdam.
The competition took up permanent residence in Montecarlo between 1998 and 2012 with the challenge that marked the start of the season. After the last UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup in 1999, the UEFA Champions League winners challenged the UEFA Cup winning team (since 2010 UEFA Europa League) and the trophy is now contested every year in different European cities.
